Seizing your Opportunities in 2025

As we stand at the start of the year and look ahead to the issues fundraisers will face, how should we respond to the opportunities and threats we see? Can we look beyond the doom and gloom of the news each day to identify where we can best position our charities and our fundraising to make the most of these times?

The potential threats are clear – political instability internationally, the UK economy flatlining, many households still struggling. The list goes on. It would be easy to feel downbeat about the prospects for fundraising this year.

But fundraisers have always worked in a challenging environment. In the last 15 years, we have gone through the financial crisis, austerity, Brexit and Covid. Yes, things have been challenging, but the sky has not fallen in. We are still raising money and will continue to do so. In fact, new ways of connecting with donors and of seeking donations are emerging all the time as new technologies emerge.

Successful fundraising charities will still be looking to invest in growth areas and to maximise their ROI. How and where they do this will vary but consistent investment in recruiting new donors and developing their support will still produce results, just as it always has done.

The fundamentals of successful fundraising remain unchanged – a compelling case for support, communicated effectively and consistently to donors and prospects over time, within the framework of a robust strategy. This is the basis for all good fundraising, regardless of the external environment.

So the real questions for 2025 are not so much what Trump will do or how the UK economy will perform (important though these are) but whether you have identified your best growth opportunities and developed a sound strategy to exploit these effectively.

How will you navigate the turbulent waters ahead and are you confident that you have the right fundraising mix for such times? There is still money to be raised out there and the best fundraisers will continue to find it. So let’s be optimistic as we look ahead and not be distracted by all the doom and gloom.
