Fundraising Compliance Review

With increased scrutiny of fundraising practices and tightening regulation, all fundraising charities are aware that they need to comply with legislation and best practice, especially with regard to how they treat donors and their data. The regulatory landscape is changing fast and the reputational damage for getting it wrong can be severe. Here are some of the recent changes:

  • The Code of Fundraising Practice has been updated
  • The Charity Commission is tightening its guidance on fundraising (CC20)
  • The Institute of Fundraising and the Public Fundraising Association are to merge
  • A new fundraising regulator is being set up during 2016 and will take over the Code of Practice
  • A new Fundraising Preference Service is being established during 2016
  • New data protection legislation is pending in the EU

As a result, many charities and their trustees are struggling to know the impact of all this on their fundraising. What is also clear is that sanctions against charities that break the regulations governing fundraising are going to be strengthened.

Is your charity prepared for this? Are you clear whether your charity and its fundraising comply with current and emerging regulation? If not, do you need to commission a compliance review?

We have recently undertaken a major fundraising compliance review for a large national charity, comparing its fundraising practices with current legislation and identifying the areas that need to be tightened up to ensure compliance and prevent potentially damaging media attention. Our team has experience of checking fundraising compliance and reporting any shortcomings so they can be addressed before they become a serious problem.
