Capital Appeals
Raising significant sums for capital appeals is a major undertaking and is a very different proposition from revenue and project fundraising. It requires dedicated resource to plan an appeal, research and identify potential donors, develop funding proposals and bids, and support the organisation with different aspects of the appeal. It can be a daunting task for many organisations.
Typically, successful capital appeals comprise a mix of support - individuals, grant-making trusts, companies, statutory funds (where applicable) and community events/giving. This requires co-ordination to ensure that opportunities are not overlooked and, equally important, that people aren't approached twice.
It is vital to establish early on whether or not there is a sufficient pool of potential supporters and donors to underpin the success of a capital appeal. The first step is to identify where the money is most likely to come from and how it may be accessed. This entails a feasibility study, exploring existing networks and analysing other potential sources of support to identify and review:
- where the wealth is that might support the appeal
- the leadership for the appeal
- who has access to funding and the networks of influence/decision-making
- how best to approach these different sources
- potential gaps, time frames and further opportunities
- whether it is best to approach the appeal in stages or not.
Once the feasibility study has been completed we can help with the many different aspects of the appeal:
- devising the appeal strategy
- developing the case for support
- recruiting appeal leaders and supporting them in 'making the ask'
- handling gifts, pledges and managing the database
- integrating activity with revenue fundraising
- handling issues such as naming rights and donor recognition
- advising on the recruitment of appeal staff, if required
It is worth stressing that a successful capital appeal has the potential not only to meet an immediate need, but also to win new friends for your organisation, who over time can contribute also to your revenue needs. If you get it right, far from being a daunting prospect, a capital appeal can give new impetus, attract new supporters and give the organisation a lasting boost.
